CHAPTER EIGHT
Shea drove to her stand at the end of the driveway with a plate of scrambled eggs in her lap and a travel mug filled with the fresh, hot coffee that Seth had brewed for her at her feet. She parked the tractor in its usual spot behind the stand and began unloading the crates of vegetables from the wagon, then filled the bins in the front of the stand.
When she unlocked the door to the shed, Shea held her breath and hesitated a moment before she pushed the door open. Part of her expected to see another pile of bedding or other evidence that someone had been there, too.
But to her delight, the farm stand remained exactly in the tidy way that she had left it. She flipped the lights on and opened the awnings across the front, placing her coffee and plate of eggs on the counter so that she could swipe bites and sips as she set up. Once the older vegetables had been switched out and placed on the counter in the back, Shea carefully lifted the trays of microgreens and placed them in the fridge.
She was alone at the end of the driveway today. Trish had made plans to take her kids to the dentist, and because she had a handful of them, it was an all-day affair. Barry, her husband, would be taking over the farm duties for the day in her absence, so there was no one left to host the farm stand.
With her awnings open wide, Shea was lucky enough to finish her breakfast, put her feet up, and sip coffee for a good twenty minutes before she waited on her first customer of the day. After the older man drove away with two dozen fresh eggs, two quarts of her home-canned green beans, and a dozen tomatoes, Shea set to work packing radishes and cherry tomatoes into green pint baskets.
Just before eight, a sleek gray car pulled to a stop beside the stand. The driver and passenger exited the car at the same time and approached Sheaâs stand.
âIâm sorry but you canât leave your car there,â Shea said. âThere are plenty of spaces down there.â She pointed to the parking spots close to the road at the end of the row of farm stands.
âWeâre here for microgreens,â the driver announced, ignoring her directions entirely. Shea saw her reflection in his clearly expensive mirrored sunglasses and remembered to paste on what looked like a friendly smile.
âThatâs wonderful and I have several trays for you to choose from.â She beamed at the man, her lips feeling stiff. âBut youâre going to have to move your car out of the driveway before I show them to you.â
âWhy?â the woman whoâd been the passenger asked. âIs this a cow crossing lane or something?â She snickered.
Shea inhaled deeply and gritted her teeth for a second behind her smile. âNo, goats actually,â she shot back in her most pleasant voice. âBut you do need to move your vehicle.
